MJS Summer Academy 2020

At one of the most outstanding locations in the quiet, green an relaxing environment of Ionian sea at the island of Cephalonia MJS launches it’s 1st International Jazz Summer Academy.

Within 8 days of music adventure, workshops , jam sessions, concerts and lectures , the selected MJS associates of this year will share their knowledge and expertise with young aspiring musicians from all over Europe as well as the music lovers and visitors of Cephalonia. They will get involved into musical activities and raise fruitful conversations about music contributing to the international debate about jazz and improvisation.

Admissions are open till May 30 2021.

Activities

Aside of the main lessons location , musical activities such as concerts , jam sessions and “learning cycles” are going to be taken place in key locations around the island such as open air theaters , clubs and beautiful beaches.

Music History of Cephalonia

Cephalonia as part of the “seven islands “ complex, followed a different path in history than the rest of the Greek region. the strong presence and rule of Venetian republic since 1204 and the successive changes of infuencer powers like British and French till it’s inderependance in 1836 gave to this region a western European direction into it’s cultural and development.

The development of opera houses and theaters , the presence of orchestas great European composers and musicians mainly from Italy but not only it’s a consequence of this rule.

The people of Cephalonia as in all the seven islands grew up with the sounds of orchestras and opera in their ears, they loved and they still do opera and singing , a part of Cephalonian tradition such as the
“arietas “ witch is basically improvised choral pieces , the ability of simple non musically educated people to create harmonies and counterpointed lines following a simple lead melody in an improvised manner it’s a consequence of centuries of musical development on that region. It’s not accidental that most of the Major Greek classical composers oriented from this region. Classical Music it is part of the culture of Cephalonia with strong presence in the life of every Cephalonian till nowadays.

Philharmonic school history

“Filarmoniki scholi Kefalinias” is the 2nd oldest musical educational institute in modern Greece witch it’s founding years dates back in 1838 it has played a major role in the music development of the people of Cephalonia and therefore in whole Greece as it became the prototype for the development of Major educational institutes such as the ”Athens conservatory” witch had been founded 33 years later.

The last 182 years the uninterrupted operation of this institute offers a great service into the music education and makes” filarmoniki scholi kefalinias” a rather historical institute
